Watch Analog, Cable and Digital TV on your PC
The WinTV HVR-1950 Tuner/Video Recorder lets you watch NTSC analog cable, over the air TV, ATSC digital over the air HDTV, and Clear QAM Digital Cable TV directly on your computer, either in a window or on full screen. Why miss your favorite sitcom or the deciding playoff game just because you have work to do?
This unique tuner supports NTSC analog cable, over the air TV, ATSC Digital over the air HDTV, and Clear QAM digital cable TV. NTSC is the analog cable TV standard, and ATSC is the over-the-air digital HDTV standard for North America and typically requires an antenna for reception. Clear QAM digital cable allows you to watch unencrypted HDTV stations from your cable TV provider without a set-top box.
The tuner also features a built-in 125 channel cable-ready TV tuner, allowing you to watch Analog TV and Clear QAM Digital TV by connecting to your cable box. For analog cable TV reception, you need an analog cable TV connection. If you have a digital cable set-top box or a satellite box, the WinTV-HVR-1950 can connect via either Composite or S-Video inputs. For ATSC over-the-air digital TV reception, a high-gain antenna is recommended. (To check the ATSC TV broadcasts in your area, go to TitanTV.com and enter your postal code. Note: depending on the strength of your antenna, you might not be able to receive all broadcasts listed at TitanTV.)
Schedule and Record your Favorite Show
With the on-board MPEG-2 encoder, which allows your PC to run at full speed while recording, the WinTV-HVR-1950 lets you record analog cable TV while allowing your PC to operate at full speed while recording, so you won’t sacrifice any performance.
Digital TV programs are recorded in their original video quality, so 1080i programs are recorded at 1080i, and so on. With WinTV-Scheduler software installed, you can also turn your PC into a virtual PVR and schedule and record your TV shows automatically.
Analog TV recordings typically consume 1.5 GB of disk space per hour using Hauppauge’s SoftPVR for Windows XP and Media Center. High-definition TV recordings typically consume 5 GB of disk space per hour.
Other features include a Dolby-TV stereo decoder for Dolby-quality audio, and a remote control that lets you control satellite and TV set top boxes for the ultimate in convenience. The WinTV-HVR-1950 is compatible with Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Media Center.

I was a bit nervous ordering this product after reading some of the reviews, but I tool a chance. I have a WD TV media player in my living room that I regularly play downloaded videos on which works great. My next goal was to record HD broadcasts from my basic cable (I have a cable that is direct to TV with no cable box and therefore will be working with clear QAM signals)onto a HD recording device but I did not want to buy a separate DVR or DVDR and use some of the features I already own in my computer with the goal of recording the shows with the Hauppauge device onto an external USB HD which I then would plug into my media player in my living room.
The Hauppauge device connections were easy with a splitter on my cable; one signal to my modem for internet and one signal to the Haupaugge for TV. Hauppauge to computer via USB. The software disc included in the box had the most recent drivers and Win TV 7 version (disc version 1.3)so I did not need to download anything more recent from the web site.
The software installed perfectly, both drivers first and then Win TV as the instructions advised. It took me a few tries to understand what was going on when I scanned for clear QAM channels. I finally realized that it worked best when I unchecked all the “unknown” channels and only loaded the channels I really wanted and that were identified as the HD feeds from my 5 local channels that I really wanted (ABC, CBS, NBC, Local Station, PBS x 2) and I got rid of all the the junk). Now the channel list was perfect.
The tuner then perfectly tuned in each channel. Recording was effortless either by directly pushing the record button or by using the included scheduler. I was able to have the recording go to my portable external HD rather than my internal HD and the buffer feature was more than adequate to handle this transfer with no hiccups. The recording are rendered as .TS files which I understand are not directly burnable to DVD and need a program for conversion or burning. The box included a software disc of Ulead MovieMaker which I suspect will do this, but I have not tried it yet. I might also try Nero 7 which I have. But I have not tried this, but I am sure that somehow I will be able to burn to DVD if I want to keep a recording separate from my 500GB portable HD for long term storage.
By the way, I am running Windows XP Home SP3 on a fairly fast machine. So This device seems to work perfectly and the Win TV software seems perfect and simple as well. As one reviewer below noted and is printed on the CD for Win TV, you must keep the CD fr any updates to the software, so don’t throw it away!!!
Totally pleased. I will addend this review if I cannot burn to DVD for some reason. I hope this helps potential users that might be interested in getting something to achieve what I described.

not much to add other than it works really well for me. initially tried w/ my vista home laptop (using media ctr) & was impressed how ez it was to setup using a coax cable connection – literally plug & play. what really blew me away me was how well it ran on a 6 yr old dell xp pro desktop that i had laying around (1gig ram; std video card). unlike a prev review i found the provided software setup VERY easy & the scheduler a snap to work with. very plzd w/ my purchase; exactly what i was looking for!
Worked fine – until it didn’t! – count210 –
‘Great’ product for perhaps 8 months, used it on an XP Toshiba Windows 5 laptop, saved space in my home office. Power supply was surge protected. Then one fine Saturday morning, no televison, just the Hauppauge image in the GUI. Reload software. Update drivers. Rain dance. Reboot. Nada. Reloaded the entire kit on another PC, nope.
I’m trying a Diamond USB tuner next, we’ll see how that goes.
[update] The Diamond 750 ATI simply blows it away in price and visual quality.

I have tried to install this product on three different PCs HP laptop, Toshiba Laptop and Gateway desktop; it would not run on any of them!!! The support personnel are terrible and snotty!! I have wasted my money on this product and at this point it is inopporatable.
